Since its inception as a manufacturer of brass cash registers in the late 1800s, National Cash Register (NCR) has been in a perpetual state of product innovation and evolution. In modern times, that drive has sometimes produced uneven experiences across point-of-sale (POS) products and industry verticals. Following the 2023 spin-off of the software-focused NCR Voyix, leadership signaled that unification and standardization would be top priorities. This presented a major challenge: a patchwork of insular systems created unpredictable cross-product experiences for users and significant barriers to internal collaboration. How might we improve the coherence of our product suite without incurring unacceptable cost and risk?

POS variants across grocery, fuel and restaurant verticals had been developed by separate teams with unique customer requirements in mind. The experience layer was valid, but an opportunity to leverage a shared UI foundation was clear.

Some POS products hadn’t yet adopted design tokens as a source of truth, while others had already made the leap. Amazingly, no two products referenced the same token set. All existing token libraries were limited to overwrites and additions to Material UI core tokens. A foundational element of my proposal was a library of universal design tokens, designed to power any product using any front-end framework.

Semantic, framework-agnostic design tokens were the core goal: Both design and dev should be able to intuit a token’s role without prior experience or documentation.

Figma variable modes provided a powerful tool for theming, allowing industry/customer-specific themes to be generated from the same foundational primitive tokens.

To demonstrate the unifying potential of shared components and patterns, I created a range of POS prototypes covering different real world retail and restaurant scenarios. Each was built with the same set of core components.

One component, many faces: a core idea I wanted to emphasize was that design tokens can power any component variations needed across line-of-business-specific point-of-sale products—no divergent component libraries required.

Uniformity x Flexibility

Shared components and patterns, combined with a robust, theme-able token library, provide the best of both worlds: a unified, maintainable, user-friendly experience for collaborating teams and a flexible posture towards unique customer and industry requirements.

I built a theme builder prototype to demonstrate the role of design tokens in calibrating the unique look and feel of each POS template.

Voyix PMs are under constant pressure to deliver new features quickly and past experience had left some distrustful of similar unification efforts. In the end, the appeal of improved cross-product coherence, easier contributor onboarding, lower maintenance and better context for agentic workflows proved a compelling combination. By mid 2026, product teams formally agreed to merge codebases for retail self-checkout and cashier point-of-sale products, adopting many of the recommendations I’d proposed. Early estimates point to a reduction of total components by 75–80%.
